Aiming to create jobs that are family supporting and to improve Greater Cincinnati’s local economy, the Cincinnati Union Cooperative Initiative (CUCI) focuses on catalyzing the development of Cincinnati-based worker-owned cooperatives. Begun as a partnership between Mondragon USA and the United Steelworkers (USW), GUCI brings together a range of national, state, and local organizations including the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW), local building trades, local NAACP chapters, Cincinnati State University, Ohio State University, Ohio Employee Ownership Center, Center for Community Change, Blue Green Alliance, and St. Francis Seraph Ministries. CUCI nurtures Mondragón-style, union-co-ops by developing and refining co-op ideas, funding feasibility studies, providing technical assistance, identifying community partners, educating stakeholders about cooperative business models, and encouraging existing Mondragón cooperatives to expand in Cincinnati.
